My Thoughts On The Sediments Exhibition
Upon approaching the entrance of the Sediments exhibition, I took note of the quote written on the floor. Taking its meaning with me as I followed the pebbles, seaglass, and other various small items towards the first instalment. The display at the end of the trail included labelled photos along the wall detailing the trip these artists took together, providing context of the journey that inspired their works. At the end of this introduction, I flowed through the following variety of multimedia installations. The space felt like walking through a manifestation of the Island’s spirit. Though many of the forms are unidentifiable, the significance was clear. David Zolya’s installation was of particular interest. The dream catcher constructed from materials, which seem to be weathered by nature, convey both the human and natural elements of Fogo Island and how they have melded over generation. There is an almost primal and ancient air to his work. Similarly, Mia Coschignano’s work highlights small slow details. Her trinket shelf isolates moments and as I stood and observed, it prompted me to create narratives of what may happen in these minuscule corners of the Island and how powerful those moments are. The inclusion of wood, rocks, shells, and textiles into these various handmade pieces creates a sense of care, close community, and tradition, while also manifesting the unique feeling of isolation one may experience on an island such as Fogo.
I enjoyed your observation that the works translate a sense of isolation. Do you think the different artist contributions stood alone or did the artworks hold relationships between one another?
ReplyDeleteThank you! I think the answer is both! The works absolutely have relationships between each other. To me, they are related similarly to how people within a family or culture are. This is to say that the roots - the core essence, are the same. The experience from which they are inspired, in this case. They themselves however have expanded and grown from that source into something unique and independent. Something that could stand alone, but still can be strengthened by the others.
